Last Friday (May 7) five of our Secondary student leaders had an opportunity to hear from expert speakers and exchange ideas with other international students at the FOBISIA Student Leadership Summit hosted by Nexus International School Malaysia. The virtual summit was a memorable event that gave our students many valuable lessons to further improve their leadership skills.
The event focused on leadership skills for the digital age, where our students took part in a wide range of talks, activities and reflections. Over three hundred students participated in the virtual summit, utilising Zoom, Discord and Google Applications to engage and work together throughout the day. There were various expert speakers at the meeting, such as school Principals, leadership coaches, experts in neuroscience, entrepreneurs and even the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Our students truly enjoyed the event and found the sessions incredibly informative. They are ready to use the skills and knowledge they have gained to further enhance our student leadership structures within the school.
Our students have shared their thoughts about the event as below.
"The FOBISIA leadership summit was an amazing experience for me. Not only did I get to hear from some very successful leaders and leadership coaches but my thoughts on Leadership, in general, have also completely changed. I’ve learned many invaluable lessons through this conference," said Aarini (Year 9)
Quynh An (Year 10) learned that “A leader should focus mainly on the positivity that can enhance mindset and choices throughout the day. To stay positive, we should try to regulate our bodies and minds by sleeping and eating healthily every day, as well as appreciate everything around us.”
"The main thing that I learned was that the mindset of the leader is really important. Although this may seem very obvious, scientifically, staying positive is the number one fuel that helps our brain function efficiently, due to the release of dopamine. An insightful comment that I heard from one of the speakers was, ‘We have two ears and one mouth, so we can listen twice as much as we speak’," said Angela (Year 12).
"I think the most important lesson that I've learned from the summit is being a caring and compassionate leader. During the conference, numerous speakers have talked about empathy and kindness which powerfully resonated with me," Heidi (Year 12)shared .
