I had a great start to my day on Wednesday morning, when I met three of our impressive Year 10 students. Bao Chau, Ngoc Anh and Thanh Mai shared with me their amazing story of competing in the World Scholar’s Cup at the Dewey School, last weekend. Along with 1000s of other students from Vietnam they embraced four challenging rounds (Collaborative Writing; The Scholar Bowl; The Scholar Challenge and the Scholar Debate).
Working together, as global citizens, our students embodied the mission of BIS Hanoi. We are so proud of them!
They succeeded at every level of the senior competition: Thanh Mai was urged on by her teammates to a third place finish in the individual student category. The students placed 5th overall in the senior category and, amazingly, secured first place in the team debate! Their ability to think as balanced and creative citizens really came to the fore, as they wrestled with such difficult titles as, “We should end life on Earth and begin again on a new planet”.
Amidst the glory, the girls’ efforts revealed the importance of one BIS Hanoi’s most cherished values- perseverance. When the girls first started preparing for the tournament, it was December 2019 and COVID-19 had not impacted upon world events. When the competition was cancelled last year, the girls had to make a tough decision, should they abandon their preparations, uncertain whether competition would ever take place, or persevere in the hope that they would have the chance to shine in the future. They did not quit and last Sunday they were rewarded with a terrific trophy and medal haul. Bao Chau, Ngoc Anh and Thanh Mai- we are so proud of you!
