Students have driven initiatives and addressed the school to promote the importance of health and wellbeing and this strong student voice is underpinned by the student leadership structure that has developed at the school.
The health and wellbeing of students at BIS is at the core of what we do. As a British school, we operate a traditional tutor system which provides the first level of support for our students. Tutors develop a connection with their tutors who they see on every morning of the school year. These tutors are supported by the Heads of Year and our Councillor. But the caring environment at BIS comes not just from the support of the tutors and teachers; it comes directly from the students, who actively look out for each other. Students have driven initiatives and addressed the school to promote the importance of health and wellbeing and this strong student voice is underpinned by the student leadership structure that has developed at the school.
With the growth of the school over the last 8 years, student leadership opportunities have also needed to evolve. This year saw a complete overhaul of the student leadership structure which was initiated by last year’s Student Council. This year’s Student Council has been comprised of two members of each year group from year 10 upwards along with two representatives from Key Stage 3, with the Council being chaired by our inaugural Head Girl and Boy, Valerie Lua and Trung Tien Tran. There are also three Key Stage Leadership teams that have allowed for a focus on issues that might be specific to certain year groups.
The Sixth Form Leadership Team has worked as a number of subcommittees. The Wellness Team (led by Ana Clara Guerrero Ower and Le Thao Nguyen) have focused on overall student wellbeing, linking to the Head Girl and Boy’s vision of creating a comfortable school environment. The Events Team (led by Vu Ngoc Minh) has endeavoured to host activities to encourage student participation in school activities. The Service Team (led by Hoang Tran Tue Linh) has worked to spread news about service opportunities and to assist Mr. Halpin with service activities. And the Student News Team (led by Do Hoang Duc) has sought to create a better way to share information and create a greater sense of community within the school.
We are proud that the students are so actively involved in supporting each other and we are excited to see how our new Head Girl, Ha Minh Nguyen our new Head Boy Nacho Loury Crespo along with next year’s Student Council, continue to drive forward this integral strand of school life.
