On Saturday, 23rd November, British International School Hanoi (BIS Hanoi) hosted the Hanoi Activities Conference (HAC) Maths Olympiad. 14 schools around Hanoi participated in the competition, which consisted of four rounds of fun and challenging mathematical activities.
The HAC Maths Olympiad is organised by a group of international schools in Hanoi, and is a competition for students who have a love for mathematics. This event is a great opportunity for students to develop their teamwork and communication skills whilst tackling some interesting mathematical tasks. This year, the Mathematics department of BIS Hanoi ran and hosted the HAC Maths Olympiad 2019 at our campus.
250 of the most motivated and enthusiastic mathematics students from around Hanoi participated in the event which made it a huge success. The students came from 14 schools across Hanoi, including: BIS Hanoi, BVIS Hanoi, UNIS, HIS, ISV, Concordia International School Hanoi, St. Paul American School Hanoi, The Olympia Schools, Wellspring Bilingual School, Nguyen Sieu School, TH School, Hanoi Academy School, ISPH, Lycée Français Alexandre Yersin.
Students were divided into 27 Junior teams (made up of Year 7, 8 & 9 students) and 23 Senior teams (made up of Year 10, 11 & 12 students), competing their best against each other for the 1st place trophy.
The students joined in 4 exciting round of mathematical challenges: Individual Round, Dragon Maths, Dungeon round and Codebreaker. Participants had to quickly and precisely perform math problems round after round, such as doing sprint maths in Dragon Maths, using mathematical knowledge to escape from the dungeon in the Dungeon round as well as going around school to find clues and complete the last round: Codebreaker.
At the end of the event, all the scores were combined and counted, our very own BIS teams did us so proud! The Junior teams placed 3rd and 8th and our Senior teams placed 5th and 7th, which was a great achievement against very competitive opposition!
“Thank you so much to the whole team at BIS for a fantastic Maths Olympiad on Saturday. It was a great first experience for our school at this type of event, and all of the girls who took part really enjoyed it. The whole event ran incredibly smoothly given how many students and team took part, and that really is a credit to yourself, the maths team and the support staff at BIS. I was particularly impressed by the student volunteers throughout the day, they were exceptional and once again a credit to your school. Please pass on my thanks to your staff, and 6th formers who were friendly, helpful and mature throughout”, shared one of the competing schools teachers after the event.
The successful HAC Maths Olympiad 2019 would not be possible without our Mathematical “Dream team” and our supportive 6th form helpers. Thank you to everyone who have joined in and supported the event!
