Assessment in Focus: Grades for University This time of year is very important for our Year 13 students. The pressure of final examinations is starting to build and now they have to think about preparing for the next stage of their lives – university.

This time of year is very important for our Year 13 students. The pressure of final examinations is starting to build and now they have to think about preparing for the next stage of their lives – university.

They have to complete applications for the universities of their choice. This entails asking teachers to write letters of recommendation, writing their own letter to the university and putting down on paper their academic life. Quite often this is a difficult process for students, however, it is also a worthwhile process because students have to think holistically about themselves and those personal qualities that they have to offer universities. A student is not just the sum of their grades.  

However, once these statements are written, grades come into focus. At BIS Hanoi, we aim for every student to achieve their highest possible grade. Part of our school process to help our students achieve their high grades is a cycle of focused testing. The results of these tests are then used by teachers to help them give students an anticipated grade that is reported on their university application.  

Universities review these anticipated grades and will offer courses to our students based on these grades. Students need to earn those grades, fulfil their teacher’s expectations and be ambitious for themselves. Students must study hard with the goal of acceptance into the university of their choice being their motivation.  

Universities ask a lot from our students, however our students are ambitious for themselves and their families and our students meet and exceed university expectations.
