Our Exciting New Learning Hub

School libraries should be places of opportunity; learning hubs where students can access the latest information, helping them to succeed in a global, competitive economy.

Dear Parents,

Students were welcomed back on Wednesday for another ambitious term at BIS. Although the majority of our community enjoyed a holiday, I must thank those members of staff who were busy at school: the teachers who invigilated the IGCSE and IB exams and the Facilities and Resources teams that ensured school improvements were carried out. Our main project over the holiday focussed on the library.

Our Exciting New Learning Hub

With the advancement of technology, the importance of a library within a school may be questioned. Why do children need access to books when we are living in an amazing digital age? Yes, it is true that you can discover almost anything you could imagine from the internet however the purpose of a library is about so much more! Many studies have shown that schools with a strong library programme and a certified school librarian ensure their students have the best chance to succeed. 

At BIS Ms. Hull, our highly qualified librarian from the UK, is teaching students to develop a passion for books as well as how to become successful researchers. School libraries should be places of opportunity; learning hubs where students can access the latest information, helping them to succeed in a global, competitive economy.

Strong school library programmes instil confidence in reading in multiple formats, which is fundamental to learning, personal growth and enjoyment. Libraries should also be imaginative learning spaces where students are encouraged to question information and be creative in their thoughts. To nurture these skills, there should be collaborative spaces for children to have group sessions with their peers and teachers. Flexible seating which suits different learning styles should also be present so that our learners can thrive.

Over the holidays, we have made a big leap forward in providing the ideal learning hub for all our students. The library will officially re-open on Monday and we encourage parents to come and see for themselves! Look for the standing work surfaces, high tables with colourful stools, lounge style seating, bean bag areas and more formal but flexible table combinations. You will notice new carpets, new check out desks and new blinds which make our environment even brighter. New technologies will also be integrated into the learning hub as well as a LEGO wall.
