Dear Parents,
It has been said that ‘Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body’. Taking times out of our busy lives to sit down quietly and immerse ourselves in a good book helps us create balance.
From the minute children are born, singing songs, reading stories and talking with children begins developing their language simply from listening to it. As they grow, taking the time to sit with children quietly and give them our undivided attention whilst reading stories, looking at the pictures and enjoying time together is precious.
Like adults, children love listening to stories and being transported away to another world through fiction stories. This sparks ideas, questions, opinions and helps our language improve.
Our Aide-Memoir is our commitment to enabling the children become Global Citizens. Through reading we get a taste of other peoples’ experiences, ways of life and culture which enable us to see the similarities that connect us all human beings.
Teachers love to read and we are trying to ignite this passion with the children at school. There are some great reading initiatives going on across the Primary school including ‘No Fuss Reading’ in Year 6. This is encouraging the children to sit down, in a quiet area with no interruption and read at home. In school we read every day, through guided reading, whole class reading, EBB books and of course our Library sessions.
It was wonderful to see so many parents this week attending our ‘Meet the Librarian’ sessions and we look forward to welcoming you to come and read with your children and enjoy this space. Ms. Hull, our librarian, shared recommended reading booklets at these sessions which have now been uploaded onto each class blog for Y3-6.
In the near future we will let you know about some workshops we will be running to help you support your children at home and reading will be part of this program. But for now, encourage your children to read, read to them and read, read, read!
