Throughout the week, the UAE and Abu Dhabi have been central to discussions, integrated into so many aspects of learning and celebration.
In Year 8 English, we explored the Big Question: "How is the UAE empowering females?" This inquiry unlocked a wealth of learning opportunities, as we delved into data such as the UAE being ranked seventh globally and first regionally in the UNDP Gender Inequality Index for 2024. For the past 50 years, women in the UAE have contributed significantly to every facet of society. This research led to fascinating discussions with the students, helping us gain a deeper understanding of the UAE’s remarkable strides towards empowering women, paving the way for the next 50 years. It was inspiring to see these discussions form the foundation of this week’s learning for so many students.
In Year 4, the focus was on the Sustainability Conference. I had the pleasure of watching the children put the finishing touches on their presentations for parents and peers. Their work was informed by visits to the Hydroponics Farm and Masdar City, as well as class explorations of renewable energy sources. As with Year 8 English, their learning reflected the UAE’s advancements towards building a more sustainable future. These efforts ensure that future generations can enjoy a healthy planet for years to come.
This focus on sustainability is reflected across the school, with the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ woven into key aspects of the curriculum. The Year 4 students took the lead during the conference, confidently presenting their findings and answering questions about the hydroponics farms and water filters they had set up in their classrooms.
The week culminated with the entire school community celebrating Union Day, marking the unification of the seven emirates and the birth of the UAE as a nation. Union Day also highlights the values of peace, tolerance, and inclusion that the UAE upholds. Despite its rapid growth, the country remains deeply rooted in its traditions, embracing cultural diversity and fostering an environment where people of all nationalities can thrive—a sentiment at the heart of our school.
Standing amongst the BIS Abu Dhabi family during the spectrum of celebratory activities, I was reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of this vibrant community—truly a home away from home.
Union Day in Abu Dhabi is more than just a public holiday—it is a celebration of the UAE’s unity, strength, and shared vision for a bright future. From grand parades and cultural exhibitions to intimate community gatherings, the capital city comes alive with the spirit of togetherness, just as our school did.
As the UAE continues to grow and achieve remarkable success on the global stage, the learning opportunities from this week serve as a reminder of the nation’s humble beginnings and the immense pride that comes with being part of this incredible federation. At BIS Abu Dhabi, we are honoured to be part of this journey and excited to contribute to the UAE’s bright future.
