After streamlining the House System this year we now have a committee of 3 Captains/Vice-Captains in both Primary and Secondary, and we all meet weekly to plan great House events. This year, we have made every Friday ‘House Day’, where we invite all of the community to wear their House shirts and to participate in small competitions at lunchtime. These events have been successful and have meant the House points to be won are up for grabs every week.
We have also had House competitions such as volleyball, dodgeball, chess, football, jigsaw building among others, and it has been so good to see so many students getting involved with them. We now also have our 4 House Boards in the Secondary Cafeteria with House information, and we also have some great banners and flags coming that have been designed by the students.
Of course, we are all part of the Northbridge Naga family, but it is nice to see that sense of belonging to the Houses as well come through with student-led initiatives and support for the respective Houses.
The visibility of the Houses and the competition we will continue to expand. Next week we will award the House Cup for this semester when the final points are tallied up. Look out for photos and videos of competitions on the Northbridge Facebook Page next semester!
The other week I was in Bangkok at the ASAC Basketball Tournament that is open for Grade 6 – 8 students from 9 competing schools across South East Asia. It gave me some time to reflect on the benefits and opportunities that our Northbridge students can access that will develop them holistically and physically.
Academic excellence is at the forefront of education, and whilst our duty as teachers is to foster this, we also have the responsibility to open students’ eyes to the wider world and their social responsibility within it.
Service- learning, or service as action, combines in school learning with supporting local communities, encouraging students to independently research local issues and take action to support those in need.
World Mental Health Day raises awareness of mental health issues around the world. It is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. World Mental Health Day was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. This year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is uniting with partners to highlight the vital connection between mental health and work.
