Whilst the school closure has presented some challenges, it has been a good opportunity to explore new and engaging teaching methods, provided through our investment in digital platforms, software and hardware.

Art with Miss Göppert

Completing practical work for at home, with limited resources, would usually pose difficulties for art students, however Miss Göppert has eased any concerns by making use of Google Hangout to engage with her whole-class during their lesson time.  She has been supplementing her lessons with videos made using her visualiser, providing much needed aids for students during the closure.

‘The visualiser has really helped me to show difficult techniques and concepts to the students and I have loved seeing such high-levels of engagement from students.’

Below are some art homework of our Secondary students:

Maintaining Excellence in IBDP with Mr Duckett

Our IBDP students are being mentored by a teacher acting as a ‘Home Learning Mentor’ during the school closure.  Who keeps an overview of all tasks set across the six subject groups and supports students with maintaining high-quality, independent learning through effective self-management.

‘It has been great to maintain a close working relationship with the students whilst away from school and know that we are offer our support as their learning mentor.  Students have making use of some excellent online learning platforms, including Kognity, to which many subjects subscribe, which provides a selection of interactive and digital textbooks and activities that allow teachers to monitor engagement and attainment.’

English with Miss Wilson

Regardless of the school being opened or closed, Miss Wilson regularly creates learning episodes related to the topic she is teaching and uploads them to her school YouTube channel.  These have been invaluable throughout the past few days and has provided Miss Wilson with opportunities to create further clips to support her student’s home learning.

"With the help of Edpuzzle I have been able to embed learning tasks and activities into various points of my YouTube videos.  I have been able to then encourage students to apply this to a different poem/story/play, than the one used as an example in the video, to challenge their thinking and allow me to check their learning progress.’

Teachers are largely making use of Google Classroom, Google Hangouts and Google suites which provide opportunities for students to work both independently and collaboratively.  These platforms have provided various opportunities for students to receive varied feedback to support their learning. It has been a pleasure to see both teachers and students engaging so positively with technology-infused learning.
