School trips – Exciting Adventures

Year 5

Hanoi is a tourist hot spot and one of the many beautiful must-see places in this vibrant city is Hoan Kiem Lake. As part of their ‘Holiday’ topic Year 5 children set off down town on Wednesday morning to explore the area and to question tourists. The focus of the trip was thinking about the environment and whether tourists consider recycling and looking after our world even when on holiday. In addition, it was an excellent opportunity for students to practise their speaking and listening skills; Ms. Ower proudly fedback that many tourists who were interviewed, were impressed by the way our students spoke and conducted themselves. We are extremely proud of our students and know they are wonderful ambassadors for BIS, but when tourists or people we don’t know recognise this, it does make us stand a little taller. Well done Year 5!

Underwater adventures

Commotion in the Ocean? No, it was F3 who set off for the Aquarium at Times City to explore underwater creatures as part of their topic. It was an exciting morning and certainly awe inspiring for our young learners who got see a huge variety of creatures: angel fish, crabs, stingray, sharks, eels, penguins to name but a few. The children were asking questions, describing the animals and shouts of ‘Wow!’ ‘Look at that!’ could be heard throughout the trip. F3S also shared their knowledge of this topic in their musical assembly this morning. They tested the audience’s knowledge by giving clues about creatures; it was wonderful listening as they spoke clearly and confidently about this topic. Well done!

Year 5I Assembly

Year 5I gave a thought provoking assembly about their trip to Cuc Phuong National Park and raising awareness about endangered animals in Vietnam. They spoke clearly and confidently in their engaging presentation which also included some audience participation. It paves the way nicely for a visit that will take place in Primary next week from an organisation called Love Rhinos. Mr. Kev has arranged a visit from this charitable group to raise awareness of the plight of Rhinos here in Vietnam.

Primary Student Council               

I met with Primary Student Council (PSC) before the Spring holiday and asked them to speak to their classes, canvas ideas and present their thoughts on the outdoor area to me. Today I had the pleasure of joining PSC for their feedback at break time. Whilst Ms. Hull and Ms. Crombie oversea these meetings they were equally impressed by the hard work, commitment and excellent presentation skills of the group.
Today they gave feedback to me about things that were working well. They gave particular mention to the additional safety precautions that have been put in place this year in the climbing frame area and also gave suggestions that they are going to work on in more detail about what we can do to make things even better next year.
Our Global Citizenship challenge this term is about Taking Action and it empowers and inspires our students when they effect change in such ways. I look forward to sharing the next phase of these developments with you.

Transition

As we move towards the end of the year, the children are thinking about moving onto their next class. The Year 2 transition meeting for parents was held yesterday as our Year 1 children prepare to move across the road from Early Years.
Next week will see the first of the transition lunches happen on Wednesday where Y1 will be over having lunch with Year 5, Year 6 will go to the Secondary canteen at lunchtime and the F2 children will go up to the canteen to eat with F3. This transition phase really helps the children feel more secure with changes they are experiencing and helps to replace any anxiety with excitement as they discover new things.

Summer Holidays Workshop

The summer holiday is a much needed period of rest and relaxation for students but sometimes it is a challenge to keep them entertained. Ms. Fitzpatrick and I will be leading two workshops sharing ideas of activities that might be useful to help keep your children entertained but also engaged in fun learning. These are scheduled for Friday 1st June 9:30 for EYC and Friday 8th June Phase 2/3 – we look forward to seeing you there.
