The next big event on the Maths calendar was the Junior FOBISIA Secondary Maths competition held in Shanghai. We were absolutely delighted that so many of our year 7 and year 8 students were eager to participate in this event, and they worked incredibly hard in the selection process in order to secure a place. We had two teams attend the event.

A fantastic first effort for these students who gave their everything to the competition. Our Year 7 students are now hoping they are selected for next year’s competition to improve even further. They all returned to Hanoi feeling proud of their achievements, having had a fun-filled, Mathematical few days, and challenged in so many different ways.

Here are some quotes from the team members:

“The FOBISIA Maths Trip was one of my most unforgettable memory and experience. Throughout the trip, I learned many things like how to cooperate with other people and Maths things like how to measure things using trigonometry. My favourite team activities were Tower of Hanoi and Team questions because those activities required a high level of knowledge as well as good teamwork. My favourite individual activity was multiple choice because I answered almost all the questions and it really stressed my brain out. I met many new friends and learned many new things from this trip and I hope next year I can have a chance to attend this wonderful competition again.”

“This is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Meeting with people from different backgrounds is one of the best things I’ve ever done and I am hoping to do this again sometime in the future. On one of the four days the school assigned us into groups and we did some activities. My favourite one was the card trick challenge! Our team were trying hard to figure out the pattern of the card and we were so relieved when we solved it. The individual round was very tough but to me, it still was a great experience! We got to do cool stuff like KenKen, Cross Number puzzles and my favourite, trigonometry! We had to use a clinometer and our knowledge of sine, cosine and tangent to measure the height of things around the school.”

“When I was doing activities, I learned a lot of things. In group activities, every person must have good teamwork skills. In some activities, a team can win if one person is good at it but I think teamwork is the most important thing, especially  in the Tangrams and Tower of Hanoi activities. In the individual activities, I learned that I have to solve the questions as quickly as I can. My favorite activity was Unlock the Box because I felt I was finding a treasure.”

Then came Mathletics online World Maths Day competition! Every KS3 student was signed up to participate in this fantastic competition. They could compete for a period of 24 hours and had 20 games of different levels that counted towards their points total. It is a huge competition and the biggest Maths competition for the whole year.  Our students were really engaged and excited to be up against people from all over the world, and sometimes even up against their classmates!

Without a doubt, our top performer in BIS Hanoi, and in fact one of the absolute top performers across the world for his year group was SEO, Sung Min from 8S who was placed in an outstanding 5th position worldwide!

We are already looking ahead to 2018-19 to try and have more students involved in competitions and we will be starting early in the year with House Maths competition for years 7-10.

The Mathematics department are very proud of what our students achieved this year in their participation of these competitions. We look forward to even more success next year.
