Hello from Tanzania!

Day 1

We had a comfortable night in our tent at camp and were feeling refreshed having rested after our long journey to get here. This morning we ate a delicious breakfast before going to explore the community. We had some morning activities at the camp learning about teamwork and sustainable development. The sun was shining and we are ready for action!

Day 2

Our service for the local school in previous years helped by building a secure fence to stop thefts from the school. They have since received many donations from NGOs due to their increased security. 

Teachers accommodation built by previous expedition teams to reduce commute problems for teachers at the school.

Visiting the school with about 70 kids in each tiny class, some sitting on the floor. Only a blackboard.

Community project in the afternoon, helping one family. We built a goat shed outside their house, installed solar panel lights in their house and tomorrow we will build them a smokeless stove.

Day 3

We built a smokeless stove for the family which was designed by Nord Anglia students in China originally.

We then finished off the goat shed and donated a goat to the family. We talked to them about their home and lives.

We then explored the Seeway NGO project which helps street children get an education and provides a safe haven. We built some desks for their classrooms.

Day 4

Today we met the Seeway project team and learned more about their projects. We explored the nursery they have for local street children. The students worked on the building site all day to help with the construction of more classrooms and a specific centre for young children with special needs. They moved boulders to create strong foundations and learned to make cement and build brick walls. We are very proud of the BIS team who worked tirelessly without complaint to help this cause.

Day 5

Today we continued building at the Seeway. We built more new walls and plastered other walls. We moved rocks and rubble to build foundations. At lunchtime we met some of the street children who live at the Seeway centre and saw how happy they are there. We also celebrated a special birthday!

Day 6

We are back at the camp today after having spent two amazing days on safari that lived up to all of our expectations and more! We saw so many animals and beautiful scenery. We camped amongst the wild animals in the national park listening to hyenas around our camp fire. On the journey home we made a stop at ta centre for disabled people to learn craft skills and sell their work. Many beautiful souvenirs were purchased whilst contributing to another great project and cause. On arrival back at camp we were welcomed by a huge barbecue and farewell party. The students enjoyed a good dance together for their last night!

Last day

The last morning at camp was spent doing reflections about each individual role in the team project and sustainable service work.
