Rhythm and Rhyme Book Week in Primary

What a week it has been! Such a range of activities going on this week for book. The illustrator and author Liz Million kicked off Primary Book Week in the auditorium with some inspiring drawings, tips on how to draw expressions and was modelling fantastic language for the children. Over two days Liz worked with all children in the Primary School creating dinosaurs, imaginary creatures and villains. Her energy and enthusiasm was infectious, staff and students have been inspired by her work.

Visualising characters or the setting in a story is important because it helps the children develop their descriptive language when speaking and writing. They can begin with a drawing, begin to describe what the character looks like, smells like, how they behave, how they feel. It helps build the children’s vocabulary which feeds into their story telling and writing.

Radical Reading, Parents Reading, Quizzes, Book Fair, Let’s read together to name but a few of the activities going on across the school. Performance Poetry, Class books, The World’s Silliest Poem have all captured the children’s imagination and our assembly today was a wonderful celebration of just some of the things going on this week.

Dinosaur Roar!

Our youngest children in Early Years, showcased their learning and also presented songs and rhymes that they have been learning. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to perform and share their learning and great to see the confidence and performance skills of our Fun Dinos and Year 1.The children’s costumes were fantastic and it was lovely to see parents there as well.

Student Lens

Book Week from the students’ perspective, a couple of children have kindly reflected on their experiences this week from Year 4 and Year 6.

“In book week I read some books, I even met Liz Million, she is a very good drawer and writer. I really enjoyed drawing with Liz Million and it was very funny at the Tuesday assembly.” Gi Yeon.

“It was the first time that I learned how to draw from a real illustrator which was so cool. I was really happy and I felt like I could draw well for the first time. I learned a lot from Ms. Liz Million including how to draw eyes and I thought I want to improve. Thank you Ms. Liz Million…It was really fun because I could talk about some books with my friends and I’m looking forward to wearing costumes tomorrow.” Ayumi.

“I like book week because my name means ‘clever book’ it was also great because we got to meet an illustrator” Minh Thu

“I would like to read one of Liz Million’s books. It was amazing that she came to our school…I don’t know what will happen tomorrow but I’m so excited!” David.

“The Tech Team has now been set up with 10 children from Year 6. The new Tech Team has been working very hard during Book Week and we have created an iMovie about everyone’s experiences throughout the week. We took videos, photos and interviewed students and teachers. We then edited it to make an iMovie which will be presented at Friday’s Primary Assembly. We can’t wait!” Alina.

The Phase 2 + 3 assembly this afternoon was an incredible celebration of all the efforts from all corners of the Primary School this week in class. The costumes looked amazing and the poetry writing and performance was superb. What a talent team of students, teachers and parents we have here at BIS Hanoi.

It has been a fantastic week of events and learning for the children, we hope that the children end the week inspired by new authors and genres and this continues their lifelong love of reading and books.
